Amazon Exhibit logoAMAZON FLOODED FOREST GRAND OPENING

The Oregon Zoo unveils its newest exhibit, Amazon Flooded Forest with a grand opening event Saturday, Sept. 29, 2001.

Latin American music and dance will transport zoo visitors into a world of South American rain forest color and culture. At 10 a.m., Brazilian guitarist Ronnie Robins will welcome visitors to the zoo with his music.

On the main stage at 11 a.m., Miracle Theater's Milagro Bailadores combines music, dance and theater, rooted in the traditions of Puerto Rico, Cuba, Brazil, Mexico and Peru. The talented musicians engage their audiences in a light-hearted manner, teaching them basic Latin American rhythms, while revealing the cultural origins of the dances.

The Aztec Dancers will follow with their traditional dances and colorful costumes, while visitors at the Entry Plaza will enjoy songs from Jared, the Mexican-American Cowboy.

Kids can touch and handle live animals from the Amazon in the Latin American Activity Center. Theyll also learn about the region through craft activities, and enjoy storytelling in both Spanish and English throughout the day. Animal talks throughout the zoo will also be presented in both Spanish and English.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and performers as part of World Animal Festival, Saturday and Sunday, September 29 and 30, as well as October 6 and 7. World Animal Festival is a multicultural celebration of animals, featuring over 60 local performers and artisans. Crafts include Ukrainian egg decorating, Indian Mahendi body art and Hawaiian net weaving.

Activities and performances for World Animal Festival run from 11 a.m. 4 p.m., and is free with regular zoo admission. World Animal Festival is presented by Weyerhaeuser and co-sponsored by KGW.
