There are five sub-species of tigers:
 1. Amur (Siberian) tigers
 2. Bengal tigers
 3. Indochinese tigers
 4. South China tigers
 5. Sumatran tigers

Tigers can run up to 35 miles per hour (only for initial short distance).
The life span of a tiger in the wild is approximately 10 to late teens, possibly 20 years, depending on individual and/or the "health" of their environment.
Zoo tigers live to be between 16 and 20 years old. There are some rare instances of an individual reaching 30.
Like a human fingerprint, no two tigers have the same pattern of stripes on their coats.
Tigers are excellent swimmers and can easily cross rivers and lakes 3.7-5 miles (6-8 km) wide.
Tigers fail at least 90% of the time in catching prey during hunts, but rate can be lower depending on prey species.....they also can be opportunistic in usurping a kill from others or possibly going after some forms of carrion.
Tigers sleep 18 20 hours per day. In the wild, sleeping a lot is normal and appropriate when not on the "hunt", but it can vary with the season and environmental effects. |
