Zoo Animal Presenter (ZAP) Team Program $60,000
The ZAP Team Program addresses two high priority education needs: to provide youth with career exploration experiences that will prepare them for the real world of work; and to improve the quality of science education through innovative, non-traditional, hands-on science learning experiences. The ZAP Team Program provides under-served youth with paid internships at the Oregon Zoo. ZAP Team members receive training from January to June on animal handling, public speaking and community outreach. From June to September, the ZAP Team is out in their own neighborhoods and the larger community making presentations and practicing communication and leadership skills. ZooTeen Program $20,000The ZooTeen program provides students between the ages of 13-18 a comprehensive academic and vocational educational experience. More than 300 students currently participate in the summer program designed to teach junior and senior high school students about Zoo operations, wildlife conservation and animal husbandry. Students can apply their new knowledge through direct volunteer experience on Zoo grounds. During the year-round ZooTeen program, students acquire transferable skills through school-to-work partnerships which provide community service project opportunities for students. Discover Birds! Summer Show $20,000The Oregon Zoo staff presents birds of prey and other birds during three 30-minute shows each day on the Zoos concert lawn during the summer. These fun and exciting presentations provide a unique opportunity to introduce over 500,000 Zoo visitors to birds that live in the local region and habitats around the world. Head Start Science Program $20,000This collaborative outreach program enhances Head Start students natural science experience by bringing the Zoo to them. Head Start was initially designed to help break the cycle of poverty by giving school children from low-income families programs to meet their emotional, social, nutritional and psychological needs so that they can successfully take advantage of formal schooling in later years. The program takes place during the school year at area Head Start centers and includes classroom presentations of animals, lessons and family programs. A culminating Head Start Day at the Zoo in the spring serves children and their families. ZooMobile $20,000The ZooMobile van takes pettable animals and hands-on displays to school classrooms (kindergarten through grade 2). Trained Zoo volunteers lead students through lessons about caring attitudes for animals and the wildlife of the Northwest. Discover Birds! School Assembly Programs $15,000The Zoos popular Discover Birds! in-school program features live, free-flying hawks, eagles and owls. Zoo staff presents a fast-paced theatrical show featuring birds and their habitats. This program is an opportunity for students to learn in a fun and entertaining way about these animals and the important roles they play in nature. Senior ZooMobile: Whats New at the Zoo $5,000Trained volunteers present a slide show about recent events at the Zoo and then involve residents in contact experiences with a collection of pettable animals from the Zoo. The program provides the participants with continued involvement and contact with the Zoo and the therapeutic benefits of guided animal contact experiences. Urban Nature Overnights (UNO) $30,000Over 300 underserved urban youth (age 8-11) learn recreation skills and basic environmental concepts while camping overnight at the Oregon Zoo and local parks.
